Melanie
Perkins Haislip, a native of Atlanta, GA, has been an artist since
childhood. In 1985 she began studying the art of painting with acrylics
and watercolor at Emory University in Atlanta.
She began working for herself in 1990 painting miniature
portraits of local scenes on Christmas ornaments. Her ornaments
have been sold to private individuals, art galleries, resorts, realtors,
businesses, churches and gift shops.
In 1991, she was asked
by the renowned 5-Star Golf Resort, The Greenbrier, to
paint portraits of several on-site locations, which included the
infamous "Spring House", the "North
Entrance" and the front entrance onto Christmas ornaments.

In 1993, The
Greenbrier contracted Haislip to paint their newly opened "Christmas
at the Depot", a historic 1931 train depot onto ornaments, as well as
appointing her to be their feature artist for the opening.
In 1994,
she was the feature artist for the historic North House Museum's holiday open house.
Later she was approached by
the historic Lewisburg United Methodist Church to
sell her art and aid fundraising bazaars. In 1995 due to numerous request, the North House Museum
invited her again, which was quite an honor, as they made it a rule not to duplicate
an artist two years in a row.
In 1997, she
was asked to paint 51 ornaments for the returning Canadians that had
participated in the Canadian Exchange program with Eastern Greenbrier County Junior High School.
In 1997, she was approached by a retail gift shop in Charleston, WV, Alex
Franklin Ltd. to be the feature artist during Franklin's Open
House. By 9am, the customers were lined up outside the door to have
Perkins reproduce their photos onto ornaments in time for Christmas.
There were 65 orders placed on that day. The
Charleston Gazette featured a story on her, which hit the Associated
Press.
